Meetings in the Horizonti Foundation

Horizonti Foundation invites NGOs to participate in the meetings in order to evaluate the reality existing in different spheres within Georgia.

Horizonti Foundation News

Two NGOs Won in Horizonti Raffle

On October 31, 2003, the Horizonti Foundation raffled the opportunity for a free service for the production of video clips for service-oriented NGOs in Georgia.

Some 30 Georgian NGOs participated in the raffle. Two winner organizations are:

• Nodar Dumbadze Foundation (Supports protection of Georgian cultural heritage and popularization of Georgian culture outside its borders)

• Center for Social and Psychological Aid “Ndoba” (Supports assistance for those experiencing psychological crisis in adaptation to complicated conditions and how to reduce negative consequences of the crisis).

The video studio of the Foundation free of charge will produce video clips for these organizations. The clips will cover the mission and activities of the winners, along with the services their organizations provide for the public.

NGO – Mass Media Meeting at Horizonti

The business meeting between non-governmental organizations and the mass media was held in “Horizonti” office on October 30, which was supported by American PR section and initiated by “Horizonti” Foundation. The topic of the meeting was “Ageing – The Forgotten Topic in Georgian Development Programs”. Some 20 NGOs, 10 journalists and TV Imedi participated in the meeting.

The NGOs, studying problems of the elderly submitted to the journalists the information so far not disclosed to the public on such painful issues as actual social status of the elderly in Georgia and the state social policy designed in regard to them. The journalists also learnt about the Madrid Assembly (II World Assembly) dedicated to the problems of the elderly and about the international action plan, designed to solve the above problems.

TV Imedi will prepare plots on two NGOs (Georgian Caritas and Samani Association) that actually take care of elderly and improve their social conditions through the financial support from international organizations.

Horizonti Foundation Regional Training

In October 2003 the representatives of Regional Trainers Network of Horizonti Foundation conducted two-day training on NGO—Mass Media Relations through the frameworks of Horizonti Constituency Raising Program in Telavi, Akhaltsikhe and Kutaisi. The representatives of NGOs and mass media attended the trainings.

Following issues were discussed on the training: media advantage and capabilities; steps of communication campaign; social advertisement; press release; press package; press conference; ways of getting information on press conference; crisis management; interview – interview on screen, on the phone; taboo; photo and its meaning, ideal and realistic forms of relations; journalistic ethics, presentation and relations with the society.

Charitable Event in Rustavi

On November 8 IREX/IATP, Rustavi Parents and Teachers Association, Rustavi open school “Zari”, club “Georgia & America”, company “Me, Rustveli” and the participants of USIA/ECA exchange program held the joint event in Rustavi.

The event had a charitable aim. The participants and the guests from international organizations (Project Harmony, Junior Achievement) of the event donated books that became the base for the library in the homeless shelter in the village of Shulaveri, Marneuli District. There are approximately 60 children of different nationalities in this shelter aged 2-15. More than 100 Georgian and Russian books have been placed in the library for them.

The pupils of open school “Zari” performed creative items for the pupils and teachers of the children’s’ home and the company “Me, Rustveli” sang Georgian folklore songs.

Society Telavi Informational Center Continues Activities with the Financial Support of Eurasia Foundation

In 2001-2002 the Eurasia Foundation financed the project “Telavi Sakrebulo Informational Center” that provided information for the large part of the society of Telavi. In 2003 the Society Telavi Informational Center once again became the winner in the competition announced by Eurasia Foundation.

The aim of the project is: to increase the level of responsibilities and effectiveness of the self-government and government entities; to increase the level of participation by the general population in such activities; to involve society in decision making processes; and to provide for transparency in local budgets.

Eurasia Foundation financed 8 similar projects also in Lanchkhuti, Signagi, Lagodekhi, Zestaponi, Kutaisi, Gori, Ambrolauri, Rustavi.

Guria Social Policy Unit Success in Public Interests Campaign

Guria Social Policy Unit achieved success in Public Interests Campaign – Sakrebulo of Ozurgeti Region by the approval the project presented by the working group of Social Policy Unit. On the basis of this decision additional 20. 000 GL were appropriated for the aim of financing healthcare programs.

Portal Caucasus

Portal “Caucasus” offers electronic versions of bulletins of informational agencies and informational sites of Georgian (including Abkhazia and Adjara), Azerbaijan, Armenian and Russian newspapers and magazines in Georgian, Russian and English Languages in its electronic issue “Publications”.

Regional Conference

On December 4-5, 2003 Caucasus Office of International Cooperation Institute, German Public Universities Association (IIZ-DVV), is planning to hold a conference on: “Adults Education and Continuos Study in NIS countries”.

Fellowship Opportunities

The FSA Contemporary Issues Fellowship Program, a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, US Department of State and administered by IREX (the International Research & Exchanges Board), provides opportunities for experienced professionals and specialists in Eurasia to conduct policy-oriented research in the United States for four months.

All applications must contain developed and focused research projects that are policy-driven with practical application in Eurasia. Research proposals must address one of the following categories: Business Administration, Civic Education, Educational Policy, Economics, Energy Policy, Environmental Policy, Human Rights, International Relations, Journalism and Media, Law Enforcement, Military Security Issues, NGO development and Management, Political Science, Public Administration, Public Health Policy, Rule of Law, Social Welfare.

At the time of the deadline, applicants must be at least age 24 but no older than age 55, have an academic degree of diploma or above, have at least three years of professional experience in the topic of their research, and possess a level of English language proficiency adequate to conduct independent research in the United States.

Training Courses from CTC

Through the initiative and support of BP, Center for Training & Consultancy (CTC) is suggesting to NGOs performing in Tbilisi training course on Organizational Skills.

Persons interested should address the Center administration no later than November 25. Applicants shouuld present the application form, letter from the person empowered in the organization and a letter of interest of the participant.

Center administration will contact the selected persons no later than November 30. Training courses will be held in the Center office on December 8-12 from 10 a.m. to 16.30 p.m.
