Meetings in the Horizonti Foundation

Horizonti Foundation invites NGOs to participate in meetings in order to better evaluate the reality existing in different spheres within Georgia.

NGOs willing to participate should contact Horizonti Foundation office one week earlier than the scheduled meeting date. The meetings will be held in the Horizonti office, which is located at the following address: 2 Dolidze St, Tel: 33 28 16/17/18.

News from the Horizonti Foundation

NGO-Media Meeting

On November 27 there was a joint meeting between non-governmental organizations and in mass media in the office of the Horizonti Foundation. The activity was supported by American PR section and initiated by “Horizonti” Foundation. The topic of the meeting was “The Role and Involvement of NGOs in Elections and Current Democratic Processes in Georgia”.

Some 30 NGOs and journalists from “Georgian Times”, “Akhali Epoqa”, “Saqartvelos Respublika”, etc. were in attendance. They discussed and evaluated the role of NGOs in the development of democracy in Georgia and its impact on the establishment of civil society. The issue of activities and strategies of NGOs in future elections and how future cooperation with government, business sectors and international organizations were also touched upon

Upcoming Lecture

On Monday, December 1, 2003 at 4:00 p.m. at the Conference Hall of the National Library of Parliament of Georgia (7 Gudiashvili Str.) a discussion will be held with Mr. Mark Mullen, Director of National Democratic Institute, on the following topic: Upcoming Elections in Georgia.

Seminar on Aspects of Economic and Political Democracy

On November 30 the New Economic School – Georgia and Caucasus Research Resource Center – Georgia (CRRC - Georgia) will hold a seminar on aspects of economic and political democracy.

The seminar will take place at the Young Scientists Club (Under Philarmony) from 12:00 a.m. to 15:00 p.m. Panelists at the seminar will be Paata Sheshelidze, President of the New Economic School and Lia Mukhashavria, NGO Article #42.

Informational Center Opened in Rustavi

An Informational Center has opened in Rustavi with the financial support of the Eurasia Foundation. The project is implemented by the Rustavi Civic Education Center and aims to increase the level of transparency, responsibility and effectiveness of self-government and it will provide for the involvement of citizens in decision-making processes for the self-government and will provide for the protection and consideration of individual interests.

The Informational Center will create a database containing important local legal, social and economic information in order to achieve these stated goals. This database will be accessible for all interested persons and information will be provided free of charge.

Urban Institute

International organizations such as the Urban Institute have been implementing many interesting programs for several years in Georgia. It has been two months since it started the implementation of two programs in Rustavi – flat owners’ association and one in financial-budgetary programs. The program of many-storied flat owners’ association implies the establishment of a managing authority by the flat owners’ themselves.

In August the Urban Institute held informational meetings with citizens of Rustavi in order to inform them about their responsibilities as of flat owners.
Regarding the financial-budgetary program it has been operating for a month already in local self-government financial department with the support of Company “GSS”.

Alongside with this, another program on Creating Civil Advisory Boards is at the initial stage of planning and the stated aim is to involve citizens in decision-making processes of local legislative bodies – Sakrebulos.

Fair Elections’ Press Conference

On 18 November Fair Elections held a press conference and shared the publicly discrepancies in election results outlined in the precinct summary protocol data.

Fair Elections addressed Nana Devdariani in writing and also sent her the above-mentioned invalid data.

Opportunities

The John Smith Fellowship Program

The John Smith Fellowship Scheme is an intensive, 6-week program on good governance, democracy and social justice. It is currently seeking applications from promising young leaders from Russia, the Ukraine, Armenia, Moldova, Georgia and Kyrgyzstan for its 2004 Fellowship Program, to take place in June/July next year.

The Program aims to strengthen and deepen democratic awareness and leadership through a 6-week course in the United Kingdom combining classroom study, work placements and visits.

Good written and spoken English is essential.

Applications for the 2004 Program must be submitted to your local British Council office. Final selection of candidates will be concluded by the end of February 2004. Successful interviewees should be aware that they will be asked to sit the IELTS exam at the end of January 2004.

Civic Education Project Teaching Fellowships 2004-05

The Civic Education Project (CEP) invites applications for its 2004-05 Visiting Faculty Fellowship Program. Applications will be accepted from October 1, 2003, until March 1, 2004. Fellowships begin in September 2004 and finish in May/June 2005.

CEP welcomes applications from faculty, retired faculty, Ph.D.s, and advanced postgraduate students in the social sciences (including area studies, anthropology, economics, history, political science, psychology, public administration, and sociology). CEP also offers teaching fellowships in law and journalism/media studies. Applicants must hold, or be expecting to receive, a graduate degree from a Western university, and be applying to teach outside their country of citizenship.

Seminar "Journalism and Democracy"

The Institute for Further Education of Journalists FOJO (http://www.fo.hik.se) announces a contest in order to reveal the participants of the seminar

called "Journalism and Democracy" that will be held for Transcaucasian journalists.
