Social Work Education Meeting

On December 15 the Social Policy Group of Horizonti Foundation held the social work education meeting. Social workers acting in Georgia from Tbilisi and the regions attended the meeting. Today they are raising the level of their qualification on issues of social work. Representatives of the media also attended the meeting and were given a chance to become acquainted with on going projects in Georgia related to social work.
The attendants were shown the film "Beginning Where the Soviet Ended" about how social work began in Armenia over recent years and discuss Georgian developments.

UNAG Receives World Tolerance Award 2003

On December 10, 2003 UNA-Georgia officially received the World Tolerance Award 2003. In August 22, 2003 UNA-Georgia became one of the honorable recipients of this reward.

Human Rights in Georgia

On December 10 th 1948 the UN General Assembly affirmed and declared the Human Rights General Declaration. Youth Democratic Club also celebrated this date. The seminar on “Human Rights in Georgia ” was held in Human Rights House attended by the Club members and the representatives of mass media. The reporters were: Nino Gachava ( Kutaisi office of Freedom Institute), Teona Kuchava ( Kutaisi branch of Georgian Young Lawyers' Association) and Evgeni Omanadze (Organization “Society and Justice”).
The reporters touched upon the issues of human rights violation and monitoring results, talked about the conditions of refugees. Much attention was paid to the harsh violation of children and prisoners' rights. Participants of the meeting decided upon to establish a coordinate net the members of which will state and monitor the facts of human rights violation in Imereti Region.

The Georgian Business Ethics Working Group, in cooperation with the American Chamber of Commerce, MARNET, and the U.S. Department of Commerce present the Business Ethics Web Conference (BEWC) on developing the Georgian Business Code of Conduct (GBCC). The BEWC was created by the Georgian Business Ethics Working Group as part of its broader Business Ethics Program, intended to help improve the business environment in Georgia through acceptance of good business practices and corporate governance standards.

The working language of the Web Conference is English. Once you have registered, you can enjoy web conferencing from any computer with an Internet connection, in English and in Georgian.

Opportunities

IREX Media Innovations Program Tender for Translation of Journalism Textbooks

USAID funded Media Innovations Program for Georgia is aimed at fostering the development of professional and self-sustaining independent media.

The major goal of the tender is to provide Georgian media practitioners and journalism students with quality trade literature in Georgian language. IREX announces competition for translation of the 3 textbooks.

Under the sub-contract, IREX will cover expenses related to the translation of the following three books: 1. Media Management: A Casebook Approach; Ardyth Broadrick Sohn, et al (approx. 350 pages) 2. Photo Journalism: The Professionals' Approach; Kenneth Kobre (approx. 350 pages) 3. New Times: Making a Professional Newspaper in an Emerging Democracy; Tatiana Repkova (approx. 450 pages). The remuneration will be defined on case-by-case basis. Approximate price range is $5-$8 per 1,700 Georgian characters.

Only a private person can apply. Interested persons should pick up 16 pages of sample translation materials at the IREX Tbilisi office and translate all 16 pages and attach it to the full application package.

Application package must contain:

CV of the translator (please indicate name, full contact address including telephone and fax numbers and e-mail);
List of previously translated material (please provide samples if available)
Timetable of the translation (deadline: September 1, 2004)
16-page sample of translation from the book, clean typed and double-spaced

Please note the applicants should provide 2 sets of all documents. Submitted
application and accompanying documents become property of IREX and won't be returned.

The Mashav Center Training Courses

The Mashav Center / The Center for International Cooperation
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Israel / announces training courses in Israel for 2004.
The deadline of submitting the application forms in Tbilisi is approximately 2-2,5 months prior to the course beginning. The application forms are available in MASHAV Center office. Competition for the MASHAV Courses is merit-based and selection will be made on the basis of academic excellence, professional aptitude, and leadership potential in the field of specialization and knowledge of English or Russian. Tuition and accommodation is free of charge.

The Israeli Government Scholarships for the Academic Year 2004-2005

The Government of Israel is offering academic scholarships to Georgian Citizens for study in the universities of Israel during 2004-2005. There are no restrictions in the field of study, although the preference will be given to the social and humanitarian studies.

 

Requirements for Admission:
•  Citizenship of Georgia ;
•  Academic degree /minimum B.A./
•  Under the age of 35
•  Appropriate academic background and abilities
•  Transcript of academic work
•  Two letters of recommendation from professors / lecturer/
•  The candidate will be asked to present qualification or research plan
•  Knowledge of English or Hebrew language is necessary
•  Healthy physical conditions

The scholarship will cover full or part fees and health insurance /excluding dental treatment and chronic illnesses/. The scholarship will include a monthly allowance up to 600 USD for one academic year only /8 months/. Accommodation, transportation and travel arrangements to and from Israel are the applicant's responsibility.

The Global Economic Policy Institute Course for Top level Officials

The Global Economic Policy Institute at the University of Westminster announces the launch of the world's first international ‘how to reform a government' course for senior and key officials.
The one-year course – MA Economic and Governmental Reform - is a unique Masters program designed to prepare senior civil servants and rising political figures for leadership roles in government. The course includes a forensic examination of why reforms are successful or unsuccessful, and closely examines the conflicts that often arise between different types of economic and governmental reform, and within different types of government structures.
