Horizonti Foundation Organizes a Conference on Partnership for Better Results

Horizonti Foundation announces a Conference on Partnership for Better Results, which will take place on March 12 –13, 2004 at Sheraton Metechi Palace , Tbilisi , Georgia .

Senior Georgian government officials, business and NGO leaders, representatives of the international organizations and donor agencies will discuss the strategies and opportunities for the development of cross-sectoral partnerships in Georgia .

Assistance to the Mentally Challenged Children

Tbilisi 1st Auxiliary School for the Mentally Retarded Children, located at 2 Gotsiridze Street , Chugureti district is the only educational institution (non-boarding) for approximately 100 mentally challenged children in Georgia , who are suffering from extremely acute conditions.
In 2001 a group of parents established a union "Parents' Bridge" with the aim to improve the physical, mental, social and moral condition and to assist mentally retarded children to develop their abilities in various fields of activities and to promote their integration as much as possible into normal life. The organization works mostly on a voluntary basis and provides mentally challenged children with successful psychological counseling as well as musical and art therapy, etc.
Currently the Organization and the Auxiliary School face the following acute problems: 1. The School has no heating; 2. There is not a gym in the school;
3. There is a lack of a professional psychologist; 4. There is a need for musical instruments and sound equipment. 5. Computer; 6. Food and medicines.

Announcement

On December 31, 2003 Georgian Parliament made amendment in the law on “Necessary Social Insurance” according to the law #3187. According to the amendment the law will be put in force from January 1, 2005.
It should be taken into consideration that 184-189 articles of the tax code remain in force. So when giving out salaries the NGO is obliged to tax a physical person with social insurance tax (2%).

Online Magazine

Human Rights Information and Documentation Center started issuing the internet-magazine and web-portal HumanRights.Ge. The “Open Society Institute” ( Budapest , Hungary ) supports this project financially.
The portal contains the database on human rights: documents, reports, national legislation and international documents, bulletins, links and resources on human rights, NGO directory, etc.
The internet-magazine will be renewed daily and will highlight the human rights issues in Georgia . Press releases and much interesting information will also be spread through the internet-magazine.

Citizen Advocate! Program presents Final Report

Citizens Advocate! Program (CAP) presented a final report of the Countrywide Assessment of Georgian Civil Society Organizations.

The United Nations Association of Georgia (UNA) and the Center for Strategic Research and Development of Georgia (CSRDG) conducted the research. It was one of the first activities undertaken by the Citizens Advocate! Program (CAP) with support from the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

The aim of the study is to provide a detailed description of the capacities and relations of the most active segment of Georgia 's NGO sector. The research studied 189 NGOs from fifteen cities in nine regions of Georgia , exploring eight dimensions of capacity: 1) fields of activity, 2) external relations, 3) structural development, 4) operational process, 5) mission and strategy, 6) logistical base, 7) financial resources and 8) human resource management.

The Anatomy of Peace – New Book for Teachers

Rustavi NGO “Woman and Health” implemented a project in Rustavi . The aim of the project was to share and expand the idea and culture of establishing peace and to increase the role of women in peace processes by implementing peace and conflict studies in multi cultural secondary schools. UNIFEM financially supported the project.

Thus far 21 teachers from different schools have been trained under this project. Five teachers worked out the module “Anatomy of Peace” – a book especially suited for teachers. The book is intended for 8 th grade students and aims to establish democratic principles for children and to help them realize their rights and to teach them to respect the rights of others. The book is now being published with the financial support of UNIFEM.

The World Bank Small Grants Program 2004

The World Bank Office in Tbilisi announced the Small Grants Program for the year 2004. To reinforce the empowerment dimension of poverty reduction, the Small Grants Program focuses on civic engagement for the empowerment of marginalized and vulnerable groups. The purpose of the Small Grants program is to support the empowerment of citizens to have greater ownership of development processes, thereby making these processes more inclusive and equitable.

Activities should:

 

  • Promote dialogue and dissemination of information; and

  • Enhance partnerships with key players in support of the development process. Key players could include government agencies, civil society organizations, multilateral and bilateral agencies, foundation, and private sector.

Activities may include, but are not limited to, workshops and seminars, publications or audio-visual materials, or other innovative networking efforts that small organizations generally find difficult to fund through their regular program budgets. The activity should be completed within one year of the date the grant is awarded.

IREX Media Innovations Program Tender for Translation of Journalism Textbooks

USAID funded Media Innovations Program for Georgia is aimed at fostering the development of professional and self-sustaining independent media.

The major goal of the tender is to provide Georgian media practitioners and journalism students with quality trade literature in Georgian language. IREX announces competition for translation of the 3 textbooks.

Under the sub-contract, IREX will cover expenses related to the translation of the following three books: 1. Media Management: A Casebook Approach; Ardyth Broadrick Sohn, et al (approx. 350 pages) 2. Photo Journalism: The Professionals' Approach; Kenneth Kobre (approx. 350 pages) 3. New Times: Making a Professional Newspaper in an Emerging Democracy; Tatiana Repkova (approx. 450 pages). The remuneration will be defined on case-by-case basis. Approximate price range is $5-$8 per 1,700 Georgian characters.

Only a private person can apply. Interested persons should pick up 16 pages of sample translation materials at the IREX Tbilisi office and translate all 16 pages and attach it to the full application package.

Application package must contain:

  • CV of the translator (please indicate name, full contact address including telephone and fax numbers and e-mail);

  • List of previously translated material (please provide samples if available)

  • Timetable of the translation (deadline: September 1, 2004)

  • 16-page sample of translation from the book, clean typed and double-spaced.

Please note the applicants should provide 2 sets of all documents. The submitted application and accompanying documents become property of IREX and will not be returned.

The Mashav Center Training Courses

The University Center for International Studies at the University of

The Global Economic Policy Institute Course for Top level Officials

The Global Economic Policy Institute at the University of Westminster announces the launch of the world's first international ‘how to reform a government' course for senior and key officials.
The one-year course – MA Economic and Governmental Reform - is a unique Masters program designed to prepare senior civil servants and rising political figures for leadership roles in government. The course includes a forensic examination of why reforms are successful or unsuccessful, and closely examines the conflicts that often arise between different types of economic and governmental reform, and within different types of government structures.
