Horizonti Foundation Announcements

Raffle at Horizonti

On April 29, 2003, the Horizonti Foundation will raffle the chance to win a free video clip production suited for service-oriented NGOs within Georgia . The video studio at Horizonti will produce the clips for two lucky victorious contestant organizations. The first winner will be provided with this service completely free of charge, and the second with a significant discount. The clip will cover the mission and activities of the winner, along with the services that the organization provides for the public.

The raffle will take place at 15:30 at the Horizonti Tbilisi office at the following address: 2 Dolidze St , 6 th floor, tel.: 334287, 330893. Application forms are available from the Horizonti receptionist .

The video clips produced by the Horizonti Video Studio for the winners of the previous raffle will be exhibited during the clip showing. Those organizations that participated in previous raffles and were not successful are still eligible to participate in the raffle along with first time players. Only the applications of the organizations attending (with the exception of the organizations in regions) will be included in the raffle.

Training on NGO Mass Media Relations

 Training on NGO mass media relations was held on March 26 in Kutaisi through the framework of the Horizonti Public Awareness Raising Program.

The training was held for the members of “Youth Democratic Club”, that is the project of UN Georgia, which started in September 2003 with the financial support of the “National Endowment for Democracy”. All together 26 members of the club have had the opportunity to study the necessary components of NGO media relationship in close collaboration of representatives of Horizonti regional network of associated trainers.

Training participants got familiarized with the steps of informational campaign, social advertisement, press release, presentation, press conference, briefings, ethical standards, taboo topics, crisis management, etc. They also shared in practical discussions on what are realistic and ideal forms of relationships between media and other stakeholders.

Seminar on School Financial Management and School Budget Planning

Association “Junior Achievement Georgia” is organizing the seminar on ‘School Financial Management and School Budget Planning' for the representatives of Tbilisi secondary schools – directors, managers, etc.

Summer School

The Association “Junior Achievement Georgia” is pleased to announce an opportunity for young men born in 1991-1992 years, and those who have or will finish the 6 form in 2004 to participate the summer school entitled “Georgian Junior Gentlemen Group”. This program will give them the chance to take a class in applied economics. After successful graduation of the course, they will be granted with “Junior Achievement Georgia” certificates. Experienced and highly qualified teachers will conduct the course from 03.06.2004 until 10.06.2004.

Feeding Program for Orphanages, Children's Institutions and Elderly Pensioners

As a response to the dramatic situation and the urgent needs of vulnerable population living in different institutions of Georgia, the Charitable Foundation of the Georgian Patriarchate 'Lazarus' and 'Caritas Georgia' are implementing a food assistance project funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through CARE International in the Caucasus.

The project “Provision of Social Institutions in Georgia with Food Products” implemented by ‘Caritas Georgia ' aims to improve the food needs of 1092 children, who are the most vulnerable beneficiaries at 11 institutions in Georgia .

This project started in early February 2004 and will last three consecutive months. The Ministry of Health Care and Social Provision provided the list of the potential institutions. The food is provided to the selected 11 institutions in Georgia, 5 out of them are located in Kutaisi, Senaki, Terjola, Kaspi, the Western part of the country, the 6 institutions are located in the different districts of Tbilisi. All the beneficiaries are children and infants with different mental and physical disabilities, elderly people, and patients of pediatric and infant care houses.

Lazarus, the Charitable Foundation of the Georgian Patriarchate has announced the opening of its “Supplementary Food for Children's Institutions” program. The program provides supplementary food commodities to more than 5,000 children in 43 institutions throughout Georgia , for a 2-month period. The program includes 9 Children's Houses, 14 boarding schools for orphans and children lacking parents' care, 18 boarding schools for children with limited possibilities, and 2 kindergartens.

Parliamentarian Elections monitoring in Sighnaghi and Lagodekhi districts

International Center for Civic Culture (ICCC) has been monitoring the Parliamentarian Elections in Sighnaghi and Lagodekhi districts. Save the Children supported the monitoring under the Civic Participation Grants component of the Citizens Advocate! Program (CAP) and members of the organization conducted training for the commission members on election issues. 120 observers were prepared and trained through this program.

Urban Institute Started Implementation of a Project in Poti

 The project called “Women Involvement in Decision-Making Processes” started in Poti with the Support of the Urban Institute. The project includes 4 training-seminars and 3 meetings and informational campaign through press, TV and radio. The target groups of the project are IDP women, students and teachers, women representing small businesses and ethnical minorities, women working in City Hall, Sakrebulos and municipalities. Informational booklet showing the results and activities implemented through the project will be prepared at the end of the project. Nona Khukhia, Sopo Danelia and Dodo Khukhia will lead the training seminars.

Eurasia Foundation Business Case Study Writing Competition

Tbilisi , Georgia — Today the Eurasia Foundation and BP are launching a business case-study writing competition as part of an effort to strengthen business education in Georgia . The competition is open to business professors and consultants who participated in the Eurasia Foundation's weeklong training in mid-March 2004.

The competition participants will have two months to research and develop individual cases on local businesses. An independent panel of international and Georgian experts will judge the case studies. The Eurasia Foundation and BP will announce the results of the competition on June 25, 2004. BP will award prizes to the authors of the best cases. The First prize will be a cash award of $1,200, second and third prize will be $1,000 respectively..

The developed Georgia-specific cases and teaching notes will be published as a manual and circulated among Georgian business schools and posted on the Internet for general use.

Georgian Protected Territories Development Center Announces the Call for Proposals

Georgian Protected Territories Development Center Announces the Call for Proposals in the frameworks of World Bank and Environmental Global Foundation small grants program on the following priority issues:

•  Protection of biodiversity;
•  Decrease of negative influence over protected territories and biological resources;
•  Improvement of living conditions of the population living in the surroundings of protected territories and the raise of their social
economic level;
•  Rise of environmental awareness and ecological education.

Grants are issued for the projects to be implemented in the villages located near to the protected territories of Vashlovani, Tusheti, Batsara, Babaneuri, Ilto and Lagodekhi on the basis of two staged competition.

NGOs, local businesses, family groups and community groups are eligible to participate. Grant amount is between 1000 to 25000 US dollars. The mentioned amount should not exceed the 90% of the project total cost. No less than 10% of the project cost should be represented as a share (financial or natural sources) of the grant recipient.

The participants should submit the pre-application in two copies on the first stage of the competition. The application should be prepared according to the pre-application form given in methodic guideline. Only the projects that satisfy the needs of the competition will take part in the second stage of the competition. Deadline for submission of pre-applications is April 25.

The participants should submit the main project-proposal on the second stage of the competition prepared according to the main project application form given in the methodic guideline. Deadline for submission is May 25.

Pristina Summer University

In the summer of 2004 the University of Pristina (UP) and the Academic Training Association (ATA) will organize the 4th edition of the Pristina Summer University in Kosovo. The program will bring together the regional & international professors and lecturers for a period of three weeks and will provide about 35 courses and workshops in the field of humanities, law, economics, social sciences, arts, medicine and natural sciences. In addition, public discussions, lectures etc. will be organized on prominent issues in Kosovar and (South) East European society.

Recreational events and excursions will also be organized for students and staff. Six hundred participants will be accepted at the PSU 2003, of which 450 from Kosovo, 100 participants from SEE/ CEE & NIS, and 50 self-financing international students.

Since 1995 the Mental Disability Advocacy Program (MDAP) of the Open Society Institute (OSI) has supported initiatives that seek to address the massive over institutionalization, the lack of community-based services, and general social exclusion of people with mental disabilities in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Former Soviet Union (FSU).

Mental Disability Advocacy Program is looking for a Senior Program Manager. The MDAP Senior Program Manager will be responsible for MDAP's grant-making program and related activities that are focused on developing sustainable high quality community-based services and advocating for the social inclusion of people with mental disabilities. S/he reports to the MDAP Director in Budapest .

Qualifications

 Essential:

- Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience in development related to human rights and/or mental disabilities
- Proven experience in program and grant management including monitoring and evaluation.
- Fluent English speaker and writer.
- Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
- Proven advocacy and/or community organizing skills.
- Ability to effectively manage several projects simultaneously in a fast-paced working environment.
- Willingness to travel internationally on a frequent basis.
- A strong interest in mental disability issues
- Good computer skills

Preferred:

- Degree in law, human rights, health, sociology, psychology, social work or other relevant field.
- Experience in fundraising and/or fund leveraging.

UNDP/Georgia Announced the Vacancy on the Position of a Project Manager

In April 2004 UNDP/Georgia initiated a project titled “Promoting the Use of Renewable Energy Resources for Local Energy Supply.” The objective of the project is to remove the key barriers to the increased utilization of renewable energy for local energy supply.

Qualifications:

•  University degree in the field relevant to the project;
•  Demonstrated capacity to effectively manage projects financed by international donors in Georgia ;
•  Good knowledge and experience on dealing with the existing governmental structures and policy framework to overcome existing legal, regulatory and other policy related barriers to successfully launching the first demonstration projects and to promoting the development of Georgia's renewable sector in general;
•  Good interpersonal and training skills;
•  Good computer skills;
•  Fluency both in Georgian and English languages;
•  Familiarity with the UNDP rules and regulations is a strong asset.
